Where Creativity Flows
Throughout my Master’s journey, there were countless times when I did my best writing whilst asleep. Entire paragraphs—sometimes even whole essays—would arrive, elegantly crafted. The challenge was holding the words in my mind until I could sit down in front of the laptop and transfer them onto “paper”.
These days, I find myself the most verbally creative whilst unwinding in the shower.
One of the luxuries of living on my own is that I get to enjoy hot showers for as long as my soul desires. Which means I can indulge all my physical senses whilst connecting to my heart, mind, and soul. I can let my creative thoughts flow.
This evening I wrote a poem (which I will share in time) and I began composing a significant part of my doctoral thesis. The former is all typed up, formatted, and ready for publication. The latter I am still holding in my mind.
It is getting late. I need to finish eating my dinner—which already waited for me to finish writing before it was prepared and is now waiting, half eaten, as I write this. Then I need to become one with my couch, crochet, and trash TV—my guilty pleasures that help me switch off before heading to bed.
I wonder whether it is because of the success of my switching-off ritual that has put an end to my mid-sleep essay composing. Or perhaps the lack of pressure from deadlines needing to be met.
Or perhaps my mind has simply found a different place to wander.
