Why is it so much easier to continue wallowing than it is to try to pick yourself up?

After over a week of tormenting the neighbours, I have finally reached a point where I am ready to share my efforts with the people of the cyber world.  With a bit of luck, Bach has stopped rolling in his grave too...

I'm on a roll today!  This time it is one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most famous compositions.

I've been feeling rather emotional again this weekend and when the tears refused to subside, I decided to explore those raw feelings through music...

Now to fuel speculation that I may be feeling a tad melancholy...

Today I took yet another step towards achieving one of the items on my '40 before I'm 40' - I recorded myself playing the flute for the first time!  But this time I am REALLY nervous about sharing...

I cannot believe it has been over a year since I last wrote about my music endeavours - I really WAS living in a cave!  Well not anymore.  As the Camp Rock song goes: "Music's in My Soul" and in order to feel balance, I must indulge on a regular basis.

Today I took the first step towards achieving one of the items on my '40 before I'm 40' - I made my first sound recording AND I am brave enough to share it in cyberspace - go me!!

Following last week's realisation, I borrowed a Yamaha Student model flute from school and whilst it is well used and in desperate need of tuning, it definitely sounds better than my much newer Pink and Silver plated Venus flute.  Then when Mary suggested I play Satine's Jupiter 313S Student flute, the difference in my playing was undeniable.

The good news is that Satine is making brilliant progress.  Mary keeps telling us that she is a natural and if she keeps it up she will be a very talented flute player.  I on the other hand have been getting increasingly frustrated with my lack of progress.

Mary is so pleased with our progress that not only is she encouraging Satine to enter this year's Woodwind Competitions, but she has even suggested that I also consider entering.  Laugh all you like, but I'm seriously considering it...

We're back at school - study for Satine and work for me - and after a two week break, we are also back to having regular (weekly) flute lessons.  I have to say, it felt rather odd to be walking into the school's music department for my personal pursuits, but having back-to-back lessons on school grounds worked out really well and saved us the hassles of having to travel to and from the teacher's premises.

We had our first-ever flute lesson today - Satine choosing to go first.  She did really well and Mary seven uggested that Satine might like to enter the annual Woodwind Competition in September.

As it turns out, Satine's flute HAD in fact arrived in NZ in time for Christmas.  But unfortunately, it took customs over a week to notify me - by post - that they were charging me a ridiculous sum of GST plus handling fees and would only 'release' the flute following receipt of payment in full.  I was completely outraged.

When Satine first began learning the fife at the start of term 4 I decided to purchase a second fife for myself so that I too could learn to play - knowing full well that we would struggle to share.  Luckily, fifes (being plastic) are relatively inexpensive so the two instruments plus postage and packaging cost under $NZ40.  This proved to be a strike of genius and money well spent for not only could we avoid arguments over who got to play and when, but we were also able to play at the same time - giving us a taste for playing duets together.

Satine began fife lessons at the start of this term with an itinerant music teacher through school.  It was intended to be a group lesson for children aged seven upwards interested in learning the fife.  However, out of the three students who indicated their interest, Satine was the only one who actually proceeded to sign up.

At around five years of age (whilst still living in Hungary) my mother took me to a music school where I was assessed as being tone deaf and told that the only instrument I would ever have any hope of learning to play is the violin.  Needless to say, my parents were less than enthusiastic at the prospect of listening to  the screeching of an instrument and I was diverted off the road to becoming a musician.  Or so it seemed...
